Together the words can be loosely translated to mean "the place we learn to change our mind" or in other words, rather than being an object acted upon to be an agent choosing to exercise agency and act for oneself.

in 1982 Zundel sensei begin learning karate by any means available. Through books, videos, movies and magazines his love of karate was born. by 1984 his formal training had began, first in Itosu-ryu but then joining the Rexburg Stewart Dojo. Master Brian Stewart introduced Jonathan to a true classical/traditional dojo. This experience was foundational for Zundel sensei, and was and continues to be his model for day to day dojo etiquette. In 1989 Jonathan stumbled across South African native and national karate champion Haydn Hulley who opened his experience to the very dynamic and very athletic Funakoshi-Ryu karate. Haydn taught Jonathan about leadership excellence and introduced him to Funakoshi Karate founder Ed Ward. Also A South African native, Shihan Ward became friend and mentor to Jonathan and personally impacted him profoundly. From Dai Soke Ward, Jonathan learned about interpersonal relationships, the value of a happy life, and the possibility of happy relationships filled with joy. in 2020 while study in his karate family tree, Zundel sensei discovered the National Karate Jujitsu Union, the very organization from whence Brian Stewart had belonged as a youngster. Reaching out to NKJU president Roy Davis III, and after a being vetted by him thoroughly, Jonathan joined NKJU where he is still affiliated.
